The Maryland legislature passed calibration consumer protection legislation on April 4 with a Senate vote of 47-0 in favor of HB 920. The bill, sponsored by Delegate Courtney Watson had passed the House by a vote of 119-18 on March 16. Identical companion legislation, sponsored by Senator Chris West, had passed the Senate by a vote of 47-0 on the same day. The bill is expected to be signed into law by the Governor after the conclusion of the legislative session on April 10 and would take effect on October 1.
The new law would require glass shops to inform customers if recalibration is required before repairing or replacing auto glass and to provide a written statement that the work will meet or exceed original equipment manufacturer specifications. Afterward, the glass shop must inform the customer if the recalibration was not performed or successfully completed. The law would also require that the recalibration meet or exceed the motor vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. The glass company may not charge for calibrations not completed or not performed.
